#borrowathon the little mermaid by hans christian andersen

adapted by Metaphrog

publication date: 04 Apr 2017

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange of an honest opinion.

synopsis via Goodreads: The Little Mermaid is Hans Christian Andersen’s most celebrated tale and is beautifully adapted here as a graphic novel by the Eisner award nominated duo Metaphrog (Sandra Marrs and John Chalmers), winners of the Sunday Herald Scottish Culture Awards Best Visual Artist 2016, and authors of the acclaimed The Red Shoes and Other Tales.

The Little Mermaid lives deep under the ocean and longs to see the world above. When at last she is allowed to rise to the surface at age fifteen, she falls in love with a young prince. In order to become a human and to be with him, she makes a dangerous pact with the Sea Witch.

my thoughts:  I had problems with the actual story as well as the illustrations.

the illustrations were really childlike giving the mermaids and at all all characters pretty expressionless features with dead fish eyes. the other problem in my own opinion that from the get go the mermaids looked like one of those poor families whos mom buys 10-20 yards of fabric because it was on sale and makes her kids clothes at home and the 5-6 of them look like a set of diy shop’s looking window. or does the grandma with the twisted fashionsense make them wear those tops and snaps photos and sends them in for Burda show off? and then theres little mermaid who is edgy and don’t want to wear the same pattern as her sisters.

and why does the grandma wear that scarf or whatever its called,  over her top that looks like she drowned a figure skater for getting such a tight fitted  top?

then theres the  girl on girl action the little mermaid watches at the age of 15, where is the parental guidance signature?

and we get the evil witch calling out on the little mermaid saying all she needs in life is to look nice and hold her tongue.

however, I didn’t quite get why the prince bothered at all to get the little mermaid to overcome her trauma as the doctor called it the reason why she didnt talk (and can we talk about how no doctor actually treated her hurting leg? I mean it was said that doctor come and go to see her and try to make her better, those are some pretty useless doctors the prince was hiring.)

However all in all as it was really weird I liked the ending the most.

I gave it 3/5 stars because the ending saved it and the coloring thorough was pretty nice.
